Asparagus and garlic

We have a couple of raised beds for some of the more permanent crops and one of those is being planted with asparagus and garlic today.  We picked up some Mary Washington asparagus roots and I’d ordered some seeds for Precoce d’Argenteuil asparagus from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds company.  I have no idea if any of it will grow but we’ll see what comes up.  The garlic will eventually get it’s own bed but for now we’ll just use a little room at one end of the asparagus bed.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen the Precoce d’Argenteuil asparagus before but the back of the package says, “An old traditional heirloom, this gourmet variety is highly esteemed in Europe for its delicious stems that can be blanched white with rose-colored buds. Italian Seed.” The Baker Creek people had some really interesting seeds in their catalog so I’m excited to try some new varieties this year.

No garden yet

I wanted to have the plowing done last weekend but the weather didn’t cooperate.  I was out to pick up gas for the tractor when it started to rain.  It is still pretty wet out there and since I don’t want the tractor to get stuck in the mud, we’re waiting for an open window when we think we can get the work done.

Spring!

I’m so ready for spring that even the rain and cool weather will not deter me!  Seed starters were filled and watered yesterday so they’d be ready for seeds today.  Blocks of rockwool were soaked and are currently draining so they’ll be ready for seeds.  I even started a batch of bean sprouts so we’ll have something fresh growing and ready in a few days.  As long as the weather cooperates just a little bit, we’ll be mowing and plowing this weekend.
